A Reverse-Huffman Algorithm for Text Entry Interface Evaluation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Scanning or soft keyboards display symbols to be selected when highlighted in an order. People with disabilities use these interfaces to compose text by using one or two input actions. We present a reverseHuffman algorithm (RHA) that extracts a representative latent probability distribution from a soft keyboard design and evaluates and compares it with other designs using the Jensen-Shannon Divergence (JSD).

Reverse-Engineering Scanning Keyboards
Scanning or soft keyboards are alternatives to physical computer keyboards that allow users with motor disabilities to compose text and control the computer using a small number of input actions. In this paper, we present the reverse Huffman algorithm (RHA), a novel Information Theoretic method that extracts a representative latent probability distribution from a given scanning keyboard design....
متن کاملGestural Text Entry Using Huffman Codes
The H4 technique facilitates text entry with key sequences created using Huffman coding. This study evaluates the use of touch and motion-sensing gestures for H4 input. Touch input yielded better entry speeds (6.6 wpm, versus 5.3 wpm with motion-sensing) and more favourable participant feedback. Accuracy metrics did not differ significantly between the two conditions. Changes to the H4 techniqu...
متن کاملCombining word prediction and r-ary Huffman coding for text entry
Two approaches to reducing effort in switch-based text entry for augmentative and alternative communication devices are word prediction and efficient coding schemes, such as Huffman. However, character distributions that inform the latter have never accounted for the use of the former. In this paper, we provide the first combination of Huffman codes and word prediction, using both trigram and l...
متن کاملA New Performance Measure Taking into Account the Mental Load in Mobile Text Entry Tasks
Text entry research has received a lot of attention in recent years because of the need for more effective and usable entry methods on mobile devices. Technical limitations such as screen size have led to the design of entry interfaces that mentally load the user in order to obtain better performances. Current evaluation methodologies of these interfaces focus on text entry speed and error rate...
متن کاملEntering Text with a Four-Button Device
This paper presents the design of a text entry device that requires only four buttons Such a device is ap plicable as the text interface of portable machines and as an interface for disabled people The text entry system is predictive the basis for this is an adaptive language model Our evaluation showed that the sys tem is at least as e cient for the entry of free text as the text entry systems...
